NONFICTION - GENERAL INTEREST & ASSIGNMENT FOR H ENG 9 (Mrs. Bilancini): Recommendations & Selections: What To Read

This LibGuide is intended to help Honors English 9 students with finding a book for their nonfiction reading and essay assignment.

FRECH-OMMENDATIONS & TIPS REGARDING THIS PROJECT

GENERAL INFO

You are most likely looking at this LibGuide because you are a student in Honors English 9 who is completing a independent Nonfiction Essay Assignment; however, feel free to explore this Nonfiction LibGuide even if you are not doing so for a class or an assignment, because there is a great deal of helpful info and recommendations on this page for anyone interested in nonfiction.

WHAT TO CHOOSE

Since you have a deadline, it would be very wise for you to do some research about a book before you start reading so you don’t have to start over with a new choice. It would be equally wise to have some understanding of the assignment requirements so you can make a selection that will provide enough quality content for your project or essay. Keep in mind that there are SO MANY nonfiction choices out there, so you’ll want to select a nonfiction book about something that piques your curiosity or something about which you have always wanted to learn more. Making a selection that interests you will make this assignment so much easier...and even enjoyable

KEEP THE ASSIGNMENT IN MIND
While considering your selection, be sure that your selection looks to offer topics worthy of discussion in regards to the assignment, whether that assignment is an essay, project, or other. Some students encounter issues because they select an autobiography of a particular person (actress, athlete, etc.). While the book itself may be interesting, it may be difficult to find something to discuss when it comes to the assignment. So while exploring a selection, look for topics worthy of discussion such as the following: overcoming adversity or a particular situation (poverty, mental or physical illness, etc.)...or something you never considered or understood reading that book...or a book that completely changed your mind about something....or the persuasiveness of the book (or the complete lack thereof)...or the author’s personal agenda in writing the book...or the clarification of an often elusive or misunderstood topic, etc. You want to enjoy the book, but you also want a book that is going to help you complete the assignment (and hopefully result in a solid grade).

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Check out the tabs on this LibGuide for reading suggestions. To explore selections available in the Padua Library, go to the "Padua Library" tab above > Access Follett Destiny Discover (blue box) > Collections > Genre: Nonfiction Indepdent Reading Project (Padua Favs).

Realize that Collections are not all-inclusive lists. There are many other titles, but the collection only allows for a max of 100 to be posted at a time. So explore the regular catalog as well.

If you are searching for a particular book that is not on a list or in the Padua Library, you know where to find me.

Hope that helps. Good luck...and be sure to see me if you have any issues or questions.

WARNING & CONTENT DISCLAIMER

For those of you completing this for the independent nonfiction reading assignment, your teacher is trusting your maturity and judgment in making your own nonfiction selections (particularly since you are in an Honors course). The Librarian and your teacher have read many, but certainly not all of these books, so we cannot vouch for all the content within them, although they all come highly recommended by library associations and academic literary journals for teens/academic settings.

As is often the nature of nonfiction, many of these books contain upsetting/disturbing/complex/ etc. content that is geared toward a mature audience. While this is true for many nonfiction pieces of literature, there are also many uplifting/inspirational selections out there. The point is...there is something for every interest, ability, personal/moral compass, and/or emotional maturity level. Make your selection based on those measures, and be sure your parents are in agreement with your choice. Be sure to fulfill any teacher requirements (permission slips, etc.).

Happy reading!!!!!
